Can You Power Wash Trex Decking?

Can You Power Wash Trex Decking

The most often used composite decking brand that we see installed is Trex. The name has actually become associated with composite decking. This manufacturer is amazing; they have a wonderful selection of products and a strong warranty. However, what about dependability and long-term care? How do you maintain the brand-new appearance of Trex decking? Can Trex be power-washed? Which cleaning products are safe to use on it?

We do not advise power washing for older Trex decking. The pressure could harm the decking, voiding the warranty. Trex Transcend, Trex Enhance, and Trex Select are among the more recent Trex versions that are suitable for power washing.

First Things First: Use a Gentler Method, Then Move to Power Washing

Always start with a broom or blower to remove debris. If a more thorough cleaning is needed to remove spills from the embossing design, use a soft bristle brush and warm, soapy water after spraying off with a hose. The same method applies to settled pollen, dirt, and any mold that has formed. If you clean your deck regularly, mold will not form in the grooves of the embossed pattern.

If you need to remove snow or ice after a winter storm, you may use a plastic snow shovel without harm. To melt ice, the manufacturer recommends using calcium chloride or rock salt. When temperatures rise above freezing, use a garden hose to rinse all salt products from the deck.

Power Washing Trex Decking

Do you wonder how to clean trex decking? For power washing composite decking, utilize low pressure and a fan attachment. Always hold the washer at least 8 inches away from the deck to avoid causing any damage. Trex manufacturers say to keep the powerwasher to 3100 psi or lower. This means you should start at a lower psi and only increase to 3100 psi if needed. To keep Trex clean, use basic soap and water under low pressure. Try an industrial deck cleaner that has been certified for use on Trex if you require extra cleaning strength, but always start with a gentle dish soap.

Steps for Using a Power Washer

  • Spray the deck with a gentle soap and water.
  • Use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub each deck board.
  • Spray or rinse each individual deck board. (Ensure the fan tip is positioned no closer than 8″ from the decking surface.)
  • Thoroughly rinse with clean water. (Leaving dirty water to dry on its own will cause a film to form.)
  • To ensure the job is done properly, hire a professional power washing company.

Pressure washers are strong instruments that, if handled improperly, can harm a deck’s surface. Never increase the pressure higher than 3100 psi or use anything other than the fan nozzle. Generally speaking, the deck will not withstand pressure that is too high to touch with your own hand. Hiring a residential power washing company will keep your decking safe and under warranty.

How to Clean the Railings

According to the Trex website, “the best method of maintaining the appearance of your Trex Signature®railing is to occasionally wash it using a solution of warm water and a non-abrasive, pH neutral detergent solution. Thoroughly rinse the railing surface after cleaning to remove all residues. Use a soft white cloth, sponge or a soft bristle brush.”

A power washer should not be used to clean the railing on your Trex decking system.

Conclusion

Your Trex deck is very easy to clean and care for because of its low maintenance requirements and long lifespan. A scrub brush, warm, soapy water, and a hose are usually all you need! For your deck to continue to look great years after installation, a little maintenance goes a long way.
